Portrait Drawing Workshop – Objectives

This workshop is designed to develop both technical skill and observational accuracy in drawing the human face, with an emphasis on classical realism. Students will work from live models and/or photo references to explore the structure, proportion, and expression of the human portrait.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the basic anatomical structure of the head and features (skull, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, neck).

  • Gain proficiency in sight measuring and proportion to accurately place features.

  • Learn the Loomis and/or Reilly method for head construction and placement.

  • Explore gesture and expression to create life and character in the portrait.

  • Practice value-based rendering techniques to model the form using light and shadow.

  • Analyze and apply the five-value system for tonal development.

  • Identify and render various types of shadows (form shadow, cast shadow, occlusion, etc.).

  • Develop sensitivity to edges (hard, soft, lost-and-found) for greater realism.

  • Build confidence in drawing from life or reference photos with increasing accuracy and artistic interpretation.

  • Create a finished portrait drawing demonstrating improved structure, tone, and likeness.
